Green. Recycle. Upcycle. Repurpose.

Many names. Same idea.

This page will showcase some of the ways we (mostly Judy) have tried to find new uses for items destined for the landfill or litter.

Plastic Bags:  I cut the handles and bottoms off of plastic bags. Next, I cut the bag into about 1" wide strips which yields loops of plastic. These loops are tied together and wound into balls of "plarn" ready for a crochet/knitting project. Usually, I crochet the plarn into tote bags which are available at EverAfterFiber.htm

Matresses/Box Springs: I saw an apartment employee breaking down a matress so it would fit in a dumpster. I was able to get got the a wire frame with the grid of wires before it was folded and tossed. I plan on using it as a trellis for climbing plants. I'll just need to tie it to a couple of T-post stakes. Now I am looking for the box springs to salvage the wood. The perimeter should make the beginning of a cold frame and the interior cross pieces another possible trellis. And the covering material may be used as covering for dog beds.

Foil Juice Packs: An upcoming project. Will be making pencil cases and wallets from them.

Kitty Litter Buckets: I made 5 of them into chicken nesting boxes. I cut about 3/4 of the bottom out of them. This is the end the chickens will enter/leave the nest. The lips catch the hay and eggs. I mounted them to a 2"x2" along the top of the sides between the ridges. In turn, the wood was attached to my coop so the nests were inside the coop but the flip tops are accessible from the outside. Easy to collect eggs and easy to clean.
